This Saturday, @zenboxizakaya will close its doors

This Saturday, @zenboxizakaya will close its doors — and it’s hard to put into words what this place has meant to me.

I first walked into @zenboxizakaya in the summer of 2017, during my first summer in Minnesota. What I found wasn’t just great ramen, but a story I’ve carried with me ever since.

@zenboxizakaya was built by John Ng and Lina Goh — a couple who first met online in 1996. Their long-distance love became a marriage, and in 2004, with just the two of them, a rice cooker, and a dream, they opened their first tiny @zenboxizakaya in the skyway. Years later, @zenboxizakaya was born, and John became known as Minneapolis’ “Ramen Architect” for his thoughtful, precise, heartfelt approach to food.

What they created wasn’t simply a restaurant. It was a community. A place of warmth, comfort, and honesty. A place where the food tasted like someone truly cared.

Since they announced their closing a month ago, I’ve gone almost every week. The last two times, I waited two hours in line — and I didn’t mind. Because seeing these long lines, even at the end, reminded me of something important:
real love for real food can’t be bought. It’s earned. Bowl by bowl. Year by year.

@zenboxizakaya won countless awards, but its true success was never measured in titles — it lived in the people who kept coming back, in the memories shared at their tables, and in the loyalty they built through sincerity.

Thank you, John and Lina, for giving Minneapolis something genuine.
Thank you for the flavors, the warmth, and the story that will stay with me long after the doors close.
